If I put steel nails in a solution of 1M HCl, will I get any rust (iron oxides), or, just ferric chloride??Will putting a nail in acid solution make it rust?
Firstly it all depends:
1] if you have excess HCl then you'll get ferrous chloride FeCl2 initially and then it'll slowly get oxidised if in contact with air to basic ferric chloride.
2] If there is not an excess of acid e.g. experiment carried out in a normal 125 x 16mm test tube, then the acid will react until used up. The nail will then continue to corrode as you have water and air present. Rust will form.
Either way, after a week there will be a brown gungy mess in your test tube and it'll be difficult to clean.
Incidentally, I don't know what country you are asking your question from, but the terms 'ferrous' and 'ferric' are very old fashioned these day, and modern nomenclature refers to iron [II] and iron [III] compounds instead.
