Yes, but eventually, a new nail will emerge to replace the damaged one.
a horse stepped on my foot a couple of months ago, and about a week after my toenail started turning purple. about 1or 2 weeks after it turning purplish it came off really easy (it just fell right off) and there was a new nail underneath, it didn't hurt at all in case you freaked about you nail coming off. i doubt that slamming you nail (don't know if its a toe or finger) in a door does the same damage as having a full grown (and peeved) horse step on your foot, so i don't think it will come off but just to be sure just put medicine and a band-aid around you finger or toe for like 1 and 1/2 weeks. if it does start to turn purple DON'T PULL IT OFF unless it starts to get kinda loose, you could damage the new nail underneath. good luck!
it may fall off...it depends on how much damage there was to the tissue. put warm compresses on it and just be careful, it may heal with the nail still intact.
