I wouldn't. The surface needs to be fairly flat for the new flooring to nail down properly. If you don't secure it properly and use some form of building paper under it it will squeak like Hell everytime you walk on it.By the way you should leave the installation to a professional. Getting used to hardwood nailers is a real learning curve and you could end up with a nasty looking floor when you're done. If you want to do the installation yourself then you are better off using a product like Pergo flooring. For nail down hardwood being installed, can it go over glue left from the previous carpet installation.?
When your right, your right! The first answer is exactly correct! I wish someone had warned me about how hard it was to do it yourself.
