I agree don't kill if not really necessary. But if you have a cat using clay litter start dumping it on the bottom and it will kill. Also rock salt will kill a tree. Depending on the type of tree you can kill some types by letting chlorine water like from your hot tub, water it. Did this on accident. Really loved that tree. Sounds like you have a tree dispute with a neighbor. Ha been there and done that. Be very careful however, if they can prove you had reason to kill it, you might find yourself in court.
